In this episode, we continue our overland journey west and head to a Unimog specialist shop in La Junta, Colorado to have our 39-year-old ex-military Unimog inspected by Rob Pickering. What we found was genuinely shocking. A clutch bearing that had only made noise briefly six months earlier was actively shredding itself inside the clutch housing and was less than 500 miles from catastrophic failure that could have damaged the clutch plate, transmission, and other critical drivetrain components. By sheer luck, Rob had the only replacement bearing in stock, allowing us to avoid an extremely expensive breakdown. While at the shop, we also take care of additional Unimog maintenance and replace two dangerously old 2011 tires with newer 2020 Michelin XZL tires that are nearly impossible to find at regular tire shops. After leaving the workshop, we encounter a major highway accident that slows our progress before finally reaching a snowy camp in New Mexico and officially entering the American West. This video offers an inside look at Unimog ownership, expedition truck maintenance, overlanding realities, and how quickly a minor noise can turn into a major mechanical failure on the road.
