They Sent the Flatbed Captain | Snow, Steep Driveways & No Suspension

Published at : 23 Dec 2025

The early bird gets in and out — or at least that was the plan.
Started the day in Washington Township with freezing temperatures. Tire tracks and divots were frozen solid, and with no suspension on the Moffett, every single bump was felt. Cold, rough, but manageable.
After that, I headed back to load up for Summit — a delivery another driver couldn’t complete due to a steep driveway covered in snow and ice. They sent in the Flatbed Captain to finish the job.
When I arrived, the driveway hadn’t been plowed or treated at all. You could still see the tracks where the other driver had to give up. I don’t mind a challenge — and I actually like working in the snow. The delivery was completed professionally, safely, and with ease.
After a coffee break, I shared a few tips for getting on and off steep, slippery driveways in winter conditions.
Back at the yard, I loaded up two identical deliveries right next to each other — mixed and matched on the truck — which had to be unscrambled on site. Along the way, I avoided low wires that would’ve been taken down if I wasn’t paying attention.
To top it off, the power steering started failing on left turns, only giving me half a wheel.
The last delivery in Scotch Plains was smooth and easy, though I still had to improvise on a tight street and back into a snow-covered front yard just to turn around.
Finished the day by dropping the trailer and bringing the truck to Hudson County Motors for service — saying goodbye to it for a few days while it gets fixed and inspected.
One of those days.
But we got it done.
