Also looks like I missed a great opportunity to make the gutter valve MUCH simpler. Thanks to the comments I now know what a "bell siphon" is. Practical engineering has a fantastic video on it. A great example of when a plenty capable person (me) hasn't seen a far better way of doing something (bell siphon) and an opportunity for another great video!
