On the fateful day of October 13, 1972, a tragic aviation disaster unfolded in the Andes Mountains. A plane, ferrying the Old Christians Club Rugby team from Uruguay, met with a catastrophic accident.

The flight was filled with 45 passengers, all anticipating a safe journey. However, the harsh reality of survival came to light when only 16 individuals managed to endure the aftermath of the crash. These survivors faced severe exposure to the elements, battled starvation, and even survived an avalanche.

In a desperate fight for survival in the unforgiving Andes, the remaining survivors had to make the unimaginable decision to resort to cannibalism. They were rescued 72 days later on December 23, 1972.

This harrowing tale of survival was adapted into a film. The movie, titled “Alive”, was released in 1993. Directed by Frank Marshall and written by John Patrick Shanley, the film is based on Piers Paul Read’s 1974 book "Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors". The film features an ensemble cast including Ethan Hawke, Josh Hamilton, Vincent Spano, Bruce Ramsay, John Haymes Newton, Illeana Douglas, and Danny Nucci. One of the survivors, Nando Parrado (portrayed by Hawke in the film), served as the technical advisor for the film. The film vividly portrays the survivors’ ordeal and their desperate fight for survival in the harsh Andes Mountains.
