We Missed A 100-Foot Tsunami By Two Weeks (Tracy Arm Glacier, Alaska)
Published at : 23 Dec 2025
We visited Alaska's Tracy Arm and Sawyer Glacier at the end of July 2025. Less than two weeks later, a massive landslide smashed into South Sawyer, unleashing a 100ft tsunami! The wave went right through the area we had been visiting, fortunately at night so there were no boats immediately in its path. The wave wiped trees off the fjord walls up to 100ft high on it's path, and was still 20ft high when it reached the end of Tracy Arm 30 miles from the landslide. It was still over 1ft high when it reached Juneau 70 miles away.
Tracy Arm is a spot with no cell phone coverage and poor VHF marine radio performance. I brought along an Iridium satellite phone, thanks to OSAT/GTC who provided a SIM card. You can find Orbital Satcom here: https://osat.com/ Or their UK branch Global Telesat here: https://gtc.co.uk/
