‘This Won’t Be an Easy Win’: Will Trump Attack Venezuela? | Counterpoints

A war against drug cartels.
A regime change operation.
Or is this all about oil?
President Donald Trump’s latest move against Venezuela has raised questions about his true intentions. The seizure of a sanctioned oil tanker and its cargo, followed by the imposition of a new blockade, has intensified scrutiny.
The administration has cited illegal migration and drug trafficking as justifications, but a third rationale has now entered the debate: oil. When then-President Hugo Chavez nationalised Venezuela’s oil industry in the 1970s, US-operated assets were expropriated, a move President Trump has repeatedly criticised.
With the world’s largest aircraft carrier deployed to the region alongside its battleships and an estimated 6,000 troops, questions are growing over whether military intervention is now on the table.
