A start-up from Austria has designed a helicopter that flies with ‘rolls’ instead of rotors. The designs look like complete science fiction at first, but as you can see here, there is already a real prototype that shows that the technology works. Let's find out how the whole thing works physically, what the advantages are compared to other electric flight concepts and what hurdles there still are. And welcome to Breaking Lab, Jacob here. Let's get going!

I'm Jacob Beautemps and I'm currently doing my PhD at the University of Cologne. Four years ago, I founded this YouTube channel together with Philip Häusser and since 2018 I've been in front of the camera myself. My research at the university focuses on the topic ‘What comprises a successful educational YouTube video?: the optimization of YouTube videos’ educational value through the analysis of viewer behaviour and development via machine learning.’ Or in short: How do you learn on YouTube and how can we optimise this with artificial intelligence? Of course, this flows strongly into my YouTube videos, because they are also about learning as much as possible about physics, chemistry, technology and other scientific topics.
