Troop is an American R&B group from Pasadena, California, known for their smooth harmonies and chart-topping hits in the late 1980s and 1990s. The name TROOP stands for Total Respect of Other People. The group includes Steve Russell, Allen McNeil, John Harreld, Rodney Benford, and the late Reggie Warren.
They rose to fame after winning the TV talent show Puttin' on the Hits and later signed with Atlantic Records. Their debut single “Mamacita” was a hit, and their second album Attitude featured two No. 1 R&B singles: “Spread My Wings” and a cover of “All I Do Is Think of You.” Their 1992 album Deepa included another No. 1 hit, “Sweet November.”
Troop released five albums, with three going gold and one platinum. After a hiatus post-1998, they reunited in the 2000s for touring and new music. Members also pursued solo careers and contributed behind the scenes in the music industry. Notably, Steve Russell wrote hits for Chris Brown, Jordin Sparks, and Jennifer Hudson.
Troop appeared on major shows like Soul Train, The Arsenio Hall Show, and in the film New Jack City. Sadly, Reggie Warren passed away in 2021 at age 52.
