The Tesla Semi is one of the three major products scheduled for 2026 that Elon Musk highlighted during Tesla’s Shareholder Meeting. Despite its importance, Musk has spoken very little about the Semi in recent years—and there are clear reasons why. First, the truck has remained in an extended testing phase, with its specifications, performance figures, and overall design still considered prototype-level, primarily used for collecting real-world data. Second, Tesla has not yet had a fully automated production line or a dedicated manufacturing facility for the Semi. Since its reveal in 2017, only about 300 units have been produced.

Most importantly, the Tesla Semi has not yet reached Elon Musk’s ultimate vision for the vehicle—a breakthrough feature that could completely reshape the trucking industry: Full Self-Driving. Until now, the absence of FSD has been the Semi’s biggest limitation.

That is about to change. Tesla has reportedly addressed all three of these challenges in the latest generation of the Semi. This upcoming version is expected to be the first true production model, replacing the long-running test prototypes. Manufacturing will take place entirely at Tesla’s newly completed factory, making Musk’s ambitious goal of producing 50,000 trucks per year far more realistic. In addition, Elon Musk has confirmed that the Gen 2 Tesla Semi includes several major engineering upgrades designed specifically to enable full autonomous driving.

So what exactly has changed, and how will the Tesla Semi finally persuade truck drivers and fleet operators to abandon diesel for good? Let’s dive in.

Originally unveiled in 2017, the Tesla Semi began limited deliveries in 2022, but progress has remained slow ever since. To date, only around 250 units have been built. Elon Musk has openly stated that the Semis currently operating within Tesla and those delivered to customers are essentially experimental vehicles. These early trucks were designed to collect feedback and real-world performance data before Tesla committed to a more polished, production-ready version. That’s why the Semi’s exterior and overall design have remained largely unchanged for years.

Now, however, the time has come for a major refresh—one that not only looks more futuristic but also enables something never achieved before: the world’s first Class 8 semi-truck capable of hauling freight autonomously.
