Repairing a Sinclair MTV1 - Part 2

Published at : 23 Dec 2025

Part 2 of my vintage Sinclair MTV1 repair.

Can this Sinclair MTV1 Pocket CRT Television from the 70's be repaired? I give it a go in this two part series...

In part one, after replacing all of the electrolytic capacitors on all of the boards, we were able to tune in a picture until we left it powered off over night.

Now it won’t tune in a picture anymore as I expected so we dive into the tuner circuit to find out where the fault is. I suspect it is either leaky Varicap diodes or the PIN diodes that handle the band switching.

The MTV-1 Micro TV was the second model of a near pocket-sized television. The first was the Panasonic IC model TR-001 introduced in 1970.

The MTV-1 was developed by Clive Sinclair (Sinclair Radionics Ltd). It was shown to the public at trade shows in London and Chicago in January, 1977, and released for sale in 1978. Development spanned 10 years and included £1.6 million from the UK government in 1976.
