RDK X5 Object Detection with YOLO | Control Real Devices Using AI Vision

In this video, I demonstrate real-time RDK X5 object detection using YOLO, where a camera alone controls physical hardware—no buttons, no PIR sensors, no ultrasonic modules. Just pure AI vision running directly on the D-Robotics RDK X5 Developer Kit.

Imagine a system where your camera decides when to turn something ON or OFF.
That’s exactly what we build here.

Using YOLO object detection on RDK X5, we detect specific objects like person, car, keyboard, bottle, and instantly control a GPIO pin (LED on pin 37). Replace that LED with a relay, buzzer, alarm, camera trigger, or smart lock, and you’ve got a powerful AI-based automation system.

What You’ll Learn in This Video

RDK X5 object detection using YOLO (real-time)
How to control GPIO pins using camera vision
Person detection → hardware control
Switching trigger objects dynamically (person → car → anything)
Two-zone AI system (Normal Zone & Prohibited Zone)
Virtual laser security system using AI
SSH & VNC remote access to RDK X5
Running YOLO models directly on edge AI hardware
Practical computer vision for IoT and automation

Why RDK X5 Is Powerful for Object Detection

The RDK X5 AI development board is designed for edge AI, robotics, and intelligent vision systems. Unlike cloud-based solutions, everything here runs locally, meaning:

Ultra-low latency
No internet dependency
High accuracy
On-device AI inference

In this project, YOLO on RDK X5 performs real-time object detection and immediately controls physical hardware—making it ideal for:

AI security systems
Smart surveillance
Home automation
Industrial safety
Robotics projects
Vision-based access control

AI Virtual Security System (No Sensors Required)

I also implement a virtual laser security system using YOLO + MediaPipe-style logic, where:

You define custom zones on the camera feed
One area is Normal
The other is Prohibited
The moment a person enters the restricted zone → LED turns ON
Exit the zone → LED turns OFF

No false triggers.
No noise.
No hardware sensors.

This is next-level AI-based security.

Remote Control Using SSH & VNC

You’ll also learn how to:

Enable SSH and VNC on RDK X5
Access the board remotely from your laptop
Run AI models without touching the device
Transfer files easily using SSH
Record your screen cleanly for tutorials or debugging
Perfect for developers, engineers, and content creators.

Hardware Used

D-Robotics RDK X5 Developer Kit
RDK Stereo Camera Module
LED (GPIO pin 37)
