Power Bank Capacity is Confusing. Let me Explain

Published at : 23 Dec 2025

Why can't a 10,000mAh power bank charge a 5,000mAh phone battery two times? After all, it has two times greater energy capacity.

Nope, power bank capacity is not a scam. The numbers are correct, technically. The problem is that the process of moving energy from the power bank to the phone is not 100% efficient. In practice, only some of the energy makes it across after losses in the power bank and inside the phone itself.

Power bank capacity is even more confusing on units using different battery chemistries like LiFePO4, which has a lower nominal voltage. Because of the lower voltage, a battery pack with a lower nominal voltage holds less energy than an equivalent Li-Ion pack with the same mAh rating.
