Our Most Risky Job? Propane Tanker Rolls Over on Freeway

Published at : 23 Dec 2025

Semi Driver Lost Control and Flipped a Propane Tanker on the Freeway! Talk about a risky job, having to deal with a loaded propane tanker that rolled over on a busy freeway. Just before morning rush hour too! I was first on scene and it looked straight out of a movie with dozens of cop cars, ambulances and fire trucks. It might seem excessive, but these propane tankers could explode like a bomb.

Thanks to the FD and the heavy rescue crew for making sure this was stable enough for us to even upright it. Unlike a container, these propane tankers don't have normal lift points. You can't just put a shackle or strap to the top and then winch in. You also can't just throw chain around it, without a huge risk to further damage and puncture the tank.

In our case here, the best bet was to first lift and bring it towards me to straighten it out, then use wood to crib the tanker. That way when I drop it back down, it sits in a "cradled" position that gives us enough gap underneath to fit a strap on Alex's side. From there, Alex is able to rig to Big Flipper and winch in to then allow me to throw straps under my side. At the same time, my dad used our 50ton wrecker to pull the tractor out from under the guard rail then attach his winch lines to the bumper pins for a smooth lift and catch.

Again, it might seem dramatic with the police and fire response, but you cannot take any risks with a load like this. So what did everyone think?
