On a recent trip to Alaska I brought a SpotX satellite text messaging device to stay in touch with family and friends. Much of our trip had poor or no cell phone coverage, but the SpotX allows two-way texts from almost anywhere via Globalstar satellites. This is not a sponsored review, I did get the device used from a friend but I paid for the Spot service.
I was a little disappointed with some of the features, namely the tracking. It constantly paused tracking and wouldn't restart unless I manually turned that feature off and on. The actual messaging mostly worked, although it seemed like we didn't always get every message.
I would be hesitant to recommend the SpotX as your only source of communication, as it doesn't seem super reliable. Fortunately we also had an Iridium satellite phone as a backup.
