I Rebuilt a 10,000 Year Old House - 80 Day Timelapse

Published at : 23 Dec 2025

In this episode of the Stone Age Workshop series, I rebuild the oldest known houses in Britain, inspired by the Mesolithic site of Star Carr that dates back over 10,000 years. Using Stone Age tools and natural materials like wood, bracken, bark, clay, roots, and deer hides, I explore how early people built warm, durable shelters at the end of the last Ice Age.

Built over around two months, this house uses fire-cut timber, rawhide and root lashings, a thick bracken roof, bark roof cap, a cob oven, spruce branch flooring and a deer hide door. The result is a shelter that’s warm, dry, and blissfully comfortable.

In upcoming episodes, I’ll be making the tools, equipment, food, and a boat, as I prepare for an attempt to cross the Irish Sea.
