How Your BLDC Driver Can Measure Its Own R and L

Published at : 23 Dec 2025

What if your motor driver could measure its own parameters — no oscilloscope, no RCL meter, no external tools at all?
In this episode, we’ll dive into how a self-commissioning algorithm can automatically determine a motor’s resistance (Rs) and inductance (Ld, Lq) using only the driver itself. The values of Rs, Ld, and Lq will be the determining parameters for the PI gain of the current control loop in the FOC. In other words, if we can successfully obtain these three values, we can automatically tune the current control.
