How to make new wood look old with vinegar and steel wool

Published at : 23 Dec 2025

In this video, I'll experiment with making new wood look old using vinegar and steel wool to form iron acetate. This detailed video walks you through the step-by-step process of achieving a sun-weathered effect on wood while explaining the science behind the formation of iron acetate, the role of black tea, and why the vinegar and steel wool solution reacts with wood the way it does

This is the first time I'm making iron acetate to stain wood, but through thorough research, trials and errors, and lots of experimenting, I've developed the best method to achieve a color that looks like old, weathered wood. I'll also be experimenting with distressing wood to give it a worn look. If you're looking to stain wood with vinegar and steel wool, make sure to watch the whole video. It shows you how to correctly make iron acetate instead of a rusty solution that turns the wood brown instead of grey
