Henry Winstanley’s Designed and Built the First Offshore Lighthouse. 🌍✨ #invention #engineering

Published at : 23 Dec 2025

In the late 1600s, Henry Winstanley designed and built the world’s first offshore lighthouse 🌊🌪️. Located on the treacherous Eddystone Rocks, this iconic structure was a beacon of hope for sailors braving the dangerous waters of Devon, England 🌍.

The original lighthouse, built between 1696 and 1698, was an octagonal wooden masterpiece 🏗️. After surviving its first brutal winter, it was upgraded with a stone-clad exterior and a timber-framed structure, topped with an impressive octagonal lantern. This lantern, lit by 60 candles and a large hanging lamp, shone brightly across the waves, guiding ships safely through the night 🔥💡.

But fate had different plans. On December 8, 1703, during the infamous Great Storm, Winstanley was inside the lighthouse making final additions when tragedy struck. The storm erased almost all trace of the lighthouse—and no sign of Winstanley or the five men with him was ever found 💔🌪️.

Winstanley’s legacy lives on as a testament to human ingenuity and resilience in the face of nature’s power. 🏛️🔥
