The 2025 National Hill Climb Championship — filmed live from Bank Road, Matlock — captured one of the steepest, loudest, and most atmospheric hill climbs in the UK cycling calendar. I was there filming and providing live commentary throughout the day, surrounded by some of the biggest names in British cycling tackling this brutal climb head-on.
Riders included Conor Dunne, Oliver Bridgewood, and Daniel Lloyd from GCN, all taking on the challenge in full race mode rather than behind the cameras. Harry Mac, the reigning National Hill Climb Champion, was there defending his title against legends like Andrew Feather, one of the most dominant hill climbers of the past decade. Also on the start list were Dan Smith from UK Bike Fit, Simon Warren (author of 100 Greatest Cycling Climbs), and Beard on a Bike, bringing his trademark humour and energy to the event.
Matt Stephens, Eurosport commentator and former British road champion, was soaking up the atmosphere and cheering the riders on live from the commentary box.
This is pure hill-climb cycling — short, steep, and savage. The crowd lining Bank Road made it feel like a Tour de France mountain stage, the air filled with cowbells, cheers, and the sound of riders giving everything for the national title.
