Before tearing into reassembly, here’s some background on why this engine was removed in the first place. This John Deere S670 came in with a running issue that led to finding a failed intake valve. What started as a single component failure had the potential to cause major engine damage if it was put back into service. To be absolutely sure there were no additional issues hiding below the surface, the decision was made to remove the entire 9.0L engine from the combine and go through it thoroughly.
With the engine out, everything was inspected top to bottom. The cylinder head was sent to the machine shop to be checked over and repaired, while the rest of the engine was carefully evaluated to make sure there was no collateral damage. Once the head came back and was properly torqued down in the previous video, it was finally time to start putting this engine back together the right way.
We’re back on the John Deere S670 with the 9.0L engine still out of the combine. In the last video, we wrapped things up with the cylinder head torqued down. In this one, it’s time to put the rest of the engine together and get this combine one step closer to running again.
Starting on the engine stand, I walk through installing the injectors, intake manifold, valve train, and adjusting valve clearances. From there we move into installing the injection harness, rocker cover, high-pressure injection lines, exhaust manifold and VGT turbo, thermostat housing, and the complete EGR system. Once the top end is finished, we install the crankcase ventilation system, fixed turbo, fan drive, and the full engine wiring harness.
With the engine fully assembled, it’s time to get it off the stand, address the turbo drain and tapping mount holes, and lift the engine back into the combine using the telehandler. We wrap things up with final shields, prep for startup, and then it’s the moment of truth — cranking the engine, getting it running, and verifying proper operation.
