We’re back again with Shintaro and another footsweep combination, this time with the gi (no gi footsweep is here:
https://youtu.be/Z3j4q0UWvFc). In this one we’re focusing on the 2-on-1 sleeve grip - much like the Russian tie - and our partner’s responses to that dominant grip. The first scenario leads us into de-ashi barai, an ashiwaza attack on the unweighted foot. Because we build on our partner’s pullback reaction to the sleeve grip, we can get the timing we need to hit that unweighted foot for the sweep.
You won’t always be able to get the timing down, though, so we’re also looking at what happens when your partner steps OUT of the attack. In the second scenario, we take advantage of the break in posture that their defense creates and head right into a katagaruma variation. This involves a change of both direction and level to get down underneath their center of mass, which allows us to follow through and put them onto their back. This one-two combination is a great way for jiu-jitsu (and judo) people to develop timing and reaction off a strong sleeve grip like the 2-on-1.
