Exploring Abandoned Alaska Salmon Cannery At Funter Bay

Published at : 23 Dec 2025

Funter Bay had one of the first salmon canneries on Admiralty Island, opened in 1902. It was largely abandoned after fish traps were outlawed in 1959. Today there's not much left beyond a few ruins, but you can still find a few things on public land in the woods! I grew up nearby, and our house was built largely from salvaged cannery lumber.

If you visit Funter Bay, please note that most of the cannery site, including some of the beach, is private property. The dock and boardwalks are public right-of-ways, but any buildings that are in good condition are privately owned!
