Completing the Custom Drive Coupling! | Franna Crane Project | Part 37

Published at : 23 Dec 2025

We’re finishing the build on the custom drive coupling that connects our new
Cummins 6BT engine to the hydraulic pump on the Franna crane!
The job continues on the milling machine where we will drill, tap and counterbore all the mounting holes on both adapter plates using the PCD bolt hole function on the digital readout for perfect accuracy. Once everything is machined the holes get deburred by hand before pressing in the splined sleeve that will mate to the hydraulic pump shaft. To stop the sleeve from rotating we’re going to TIG weld it in place but that doesn’t go smoothly when a crack forms across the weld surface. It takes a few careful passes to sort out before the weld is right. Once that’s done, we’ll test assemble the full 3-piece coupling before bolting it up to finally join the engine and hydraulic pump together. That completes the engine upgrades while it’s out of the crane, but once it’s back in the rear frame there’ll be plenty more to do — so stay tuned!
