Christmas Chaos in California! Floods Atmospheric River Swept Away Homes in Redding
The city of Redding in Northern California was also hit by severe flooding after torrential rains brought by an atmospheric storm system known as an atmospheric river pounded the region. Extreme rainfall, which reached more than six inches in less than twenty-four hours, caused the city's rivers, creeks, and drainage channels to overflow beyond their capacity to accommodate the influx. Water then inundated the city center, highways, and neighborhoods, forcing authorities to conduct emergency rescues and close several major roads. This flash flooding caused significant damage, disruption, and even loss of life. The rain began Saturday night and continued through Sunday afternoon, with increasing intensity on Sunday morning. The Sacramento branch of the National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for Redding and Shasta County, which remained in effect until 10:45 p.m. on December 21. In a short time, the torrential rainfall flooded major highways such as Interstate 5 and Highway 299, stranding vehicles and forcing drivers to seek shelter. Dozens of vehicles were immobilized due to being stuck on flooded roads, forcing rescue teams to conduct evacuation operations.
