Building A Skin On Frame Canoe

Published at : 23 Dec 2025

I have recently moved to an area closer to the water and would love to get out on the water more, so I decided I wanted to build a super lightweight solo canoe, so I could go out canoeing on my own.

I have long been an admirer of Cape Falcon Kayaks and really like the way Brian builds his boats, I also really like with his system that you could customise the shape of the canoe to suit your needs. So I decided to buy a course from him which includes extensive videos on how to approach each facet of the build. I would really recommend his course if you want to build a skin on frame canoe or kayak.

The canoe is made from Western Red Cedar for the gunwales, keel, stringers and stems. White oak for the ribs and Ash for the seat, seat blocks and Rub strips. With Delrin wear strips.

The skin is a ballistic nylon bought from the skin boat store, coated in the Corey's Goop 2 part polyurethane.

I'm super happy with how this turned out and I'm looking forward to being able to take it out canoeing over the summer.
