Join me on this overnight expedition of my return to the old goldfields, where the bushfires have exposed workings that haven’t seen sunlight in almost 140 years.
Armed with a few sample bags from these abandoned diggings, I follow the trail left behind by the old-timers - panning, testing, and trying to understand what they saw in this forgotten corner of the wilderness. I’m here to document what they left behind: the wash, the old faces, the scattered hints of their hard-won lives.
And as I pan each sample and track their trail deeper into the bush, the spirit of the old-timers seems to pull me toward something I never expected.
